ABOUT

The History

The annual USC Hiking and Jogging Scholarship was created by Dr. David Eggleston (DDS '70, Pros '72) and Dr. Andrew Vo (DDS '15) in 2011,  with the purpose of providing the dedicated students and the family at the Ostrow School of Dentistry an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful 8K Blackstar Canyon trail in Orange County, California. Since the inaugural year in 2011, this event has already given back over $100,000 to the students at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC and we look forward to giving back even more in the following years! Each year, students gather at the Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC and take chartered busses to the base of the hike.  After a 45 mile bus ride, the race begins! The Hiking & Jogging Scholarship event provides a day to enjoy each other's company with over 200 students, faculty, staff members, alumni, special guests and our very own, Dean Sadan! Everyone is guaranteed at least one share of the pot size, so everyone is a winner! Participants enjoy a beautiful scenery hike or jog as they make their way up the trail. Once reaching the top for a quick photo opportunity, a leisurely stroll back down the windy trail leads to a free lunch. Each year, Dr. Eggleston donates as one of the of the major donors along with Patterson Dental, and Dr. & Mrs. Howard Landesman.  In addition, Dr. Eggleston covers the busses, food, refreshments, shirts, and facilities so the other donors donations go 100% into student scholarships. Subway sandwiches, bags of assorted chips, snacks, and frozen bottles of water are provided by Dr. Eggleston’s wife: Laraine, Periodontist: Michael Gahagan and his wife Kathy, along with Kate Eastman.  Dr. Eggleston's staff provides sliced oranges and candy snacks.  Food, ice water, and refreshments are available at the trail head starting at 9:00 am for students going part way up the canyon and returning to the trail head early. This is truly an event to remember!

Hello! My name is Caitlin Waters and I am a DDS student at the Ostrow School of Dentistry.  I grew up in Clovis, New Mexico and went to undergrad at Texas Tech University, where I was a Division 1 Varsity track and field athlete. Track and field equipped me with many experiences and opportunities that I will use to support and enrich my position as your diretor. My goal is to motivate and encourage all students, faculty, and staff to maximize participation in the upcoming 2016 hiking and jogging scholarship. Get excited for a fun Trojan experience along your DDS peers and an opportunity to earn some cash! Fight on! “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."

Judy Naziri

My name is Judy Naziri, I'm a second year dental student at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC. I graduated from UCLA with a BA in Anthropology. I am a Los Angeles native and have always used the weather to my advantage, using every opportunity possible to do an outdoor activity. This includes hiking, playing lacrosse, and biking. When I'm not outdoors I enjoy listening to music and discovering up and coming artists. I look forward to being a board member and encouraging fellow Trojans in the acts of hiking, jogging, and fighting on!

Janice Lee

Interim Past Director, DDS 2017

As interim past director, my main goal was to continue to inspire the Trojan Family environment for the DDS program. I believe the Hiking and Jogging Scholarship provides an outlet for serving students and faculty alike to get to know one another in a lax environment. The fact that students can jog along side their Dean is truly an unforgettable experience and builds a sense of Trojan community. Not to mention, the event brings to light the different faces of the USC program: community service representatives, ASB council members, hygiene, ethics committee proponents, researchers, and so many more facets of USC. I hope to build on that atmosphere of community and help us thrive! Fight On!"We inspire and perspire together as a family of Trojans.".
